Brutal But Beautiful

October 21, 2017

We were proud to see the Isle of Man Cyclefest Gran Fondo recently featured in Cycling Weekly – the UK’s premier cycling magazine. Part of the publication’s ‘Insider’s Guide’ series, the article’s author, Chris Marshal Bell, wrote of his experience riding the 82 mile course with Cyclefest Ambassador Rob Holden.

Part review, part travelogue, the Insider’s Guide provides an entertaining and informative overview of the Gran Fondo and its many individual challenges. Picking up on what makes the Gran Fondo special, Chris talks of the quiet lanes and brutal climbs that have helped forged champions. Indeed, the article even touches on the island’s unique cycling past as well as its impressive position in cycling today.

Of course, the Gran Fondo provides a stern test for any cyclist, and name checking our 2017 champion Mark Christian, Chris was left in no doubt how impressive a sub-four hour time really is. After conquering all the hills and valleys that make up the Gran Fondo’s 82 miles, Chris expertly summed up the experience in just three words; Brutal but Beautiful.

To read the full feature, simply head over to our Gran Fondo preview page. Readers of Cycling Weekly, meanwhile, can look out for our series of adverts running between now and Christmas that feature Chris’s words and some stunning new images courtesy of top TT photographer Dave Collister.

“Chris and the team at Cycling Weekly really got under the skin of the Gran Fondo. Chris also nailed what the Gran Fondo experience means for our participants. We don’t shy away from the fact it provides a very tough test, but it’s all the more rewarding for it. It’s wonderful to watch finishers congratulate each other for a fantastic achievement – one that we’re sure they reflect on for a long time after.”
